Eagles Sign Alvarado

ESPANOLA, New Mexico. – Northern New Mexico College head men’s basketball coach Enzley Mitchell has announced the signing of local standout Luis Alvarado for the 2010-11 season.

Luis Alvarado, a 6-4 guard from Espanola Valley High School has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Northern New Mexico College and is the fifth prep star to commit to Northern, joining Isaac Jeantete of Santa Fe, Cameron Nelson of Commerce, TX, Josh Sanchez of Albuquerque, and Kurtis Thomas from Santa Fe.

Alvarado averaged 18 points per game last season for the 4A state runner up Sundevils, who finished the season with a 28-3 record. He led the Sundevils in scoring and was named first team all conference, all state, and selected to participate in the North-South All-Star game.

“Luis has the ability to put pressure on defenses by getting into the lane and finishing with a nice pull up jumpshot or getting to the rim,” said Mitchell. “ As Luis adjusts to the college game, improves his strength and outside shooting, he will be a great addition for us.” “His athleticism and versatility will allow him to play at either the shooting guard or small forward position.” Luis played for one of the best high school programs in the state, and has proven himself against some of the best players in the state. He comes from a great family and will be an excellent fit for our team.
