RYAN CORDOVA , HEAD MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH

Coach CordovaRyan Cordova begins his second year as the Head Coach for the NNMC Eagles. A native of Northern New Mexico, Cordova returned to Espanola to pursue his career in College Basketball. Cordova Graduated from McCurdy High School in 1993, and went on to play College Football at Fort Lewis College from 1993-1995.

Cordova began his coaching career while at Fort Lewis College, serving as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach from 1995-1998. When Head Coach, Keith Durham, was reassigned to the Men’s Basketball team, he took Cordova with him. Cordova served as Assistant Basketball coach for the Fort Lewis College Men’s team from 1998-2000.

In 2000 Cordova moved to Albuquerque to work for the New Mexico Slam, a Semi-Professional basketball team playing in the IBL. While at the Slam he worked along side coaches like John Whisenant, the current General Manager, and Head Basketball coach for the WNBA team New York Liberty, as well as Rob Robbins, former UNM Lobo and Denver Nugget. It was then that Cordova began working on his Masters Degree in Sports Administration in order to continue his career in sports.

Cordova was hired in 2001 to serve as Athletic Director and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Gallup High School, in Gallup NM. Cordova held that position from 2001-2007. Cordova took the Bengals to 2 State playoff appearances, a feat that had not been accomplished in 22 years, and led the Bengals into the PIT in 2007, an accomplishment that the city of Gallup waited 25 years for.

In 2007 Cordova made a move in his career, joining his family’s construction company. While working with Blue Sky Builders Inc., Cordova assisted Espanola High School to 2 consecutive State Semi-Final appearances, in 2008 and 2009.

It was in 2010 that Cordova took over the helm at Northern New Mexico College. In his first year, Cordova lead the Eagles to a third place finish in the AII. In their first Conference Championship appearance the Eagles fell short in the Semi-Final game losing to Philander-Smith University.

Cordova looks to build on the positive strides taken in 2010, bringing in a recruiting class that boasts the New Mexico 5A Metro Player of the Year, (Mario Flores) and New Mexico 4A Player of the Year (Rodney Coles). Cordova was also pleasantly surprised with the signing of El Paso 5A Player of the Year, Tevin Caldwell. Showcasing New Mexico athletes was Cordova’s intention for the future of the Eagles, and he is holding true to his promise. The Eagles will carry 15 New Mexico athletes on the bench in 2011, with only 5 out of state players. Cordova resides in Espanola with his wife Brandi, and their 3 children Noah, Maci, and Joshua.
